History and Canon/Headcanon

• NOTES •

- Dates compiled from here and here

- Assumes Nico was born in January. Also assumes he does not recollect his actual age due to memory loss. Guesstimates Percy and others have made about his age may have been incorrect.

• BEGINNING •

- Born sometime around 1932 in Venice, Italy, to Maria di Angelo and Hades.

- Has an older sister, Bianca.

- Remembers visiting Diocletian’s Palace in Split, Croatia around the age of six. (c. 1938)

- Remembers a neighbor, Pietro, returning from Mussolini’s campaign in Africa.

- Moved to Washington DC, late 1930s or early 1940s, lived in a fancy hotel

- Zeus, attempting to kill Bianca and Nico, destroys the hotel and kills Maria instead.

- Bianca and Nico’s memories are erased. They are enrolled in boarding school and told their parents are dead. Acting as a lawyer, the Fury Alecto comes to check on them from time to time.

• LOTUS HOTEL AND CASINO •

-Hoping one of his children might be the “half-blood of the Eldest Gods” spoken of in the Great Prophecy, Hades sends them to the Lotus Casino in Las Vegas for safe keeping.

- Because time moves differently there, what feels like only a month to them is in actuality 70 years.

- Alecto, disguised as another lawyer, retrieves them and enrolls them in a military school, Westover Hall, in Bar Harbor, Maine.

- They are again told their parents are dead, and they are living off a trust fund.

• TITAN’S CURSE • December 14-21, 2007 (age 10-11)

- Percy and friends rescue Bianca and Nico from a manticore and near-kidnapping into a “great army”. Nico sees in Percy a hero from his games and is immediately taken with him.

- They learn they are demigods and brought to Camp Half-Blood in Long Island, NY.

- Bianca joins the Hunters of Artemis. Nico feels that she has abandoned him.

- Bianca goes on her first quest. Nico makes Percy promise to look after his sister.

- December 18: Bianca takes a Hades figurine (the only one missing from Nico’s Mythomagic collection) from the Junkyard of the Gods, causing Talos to attack. She dies while taking it down.

- Nico senses Bianca’s death.

- December 21: Nico receives confirmation of Bianca’s death from Percy. Percy gives Nico the Hades figurine, but he throws it back. He tells Percy that he hates him and runs away from CHB.

- Percy, Grover and Annabeth agree to keep Nico’s parentage as a son of Hades secret, worried that if the Olympians learned there was another child of the Big Three, fighting would break out.

• GROWING PAINS •

- Nico enters the Labyrinth and is found by Minos.

- He has learned to summon ghosts and undead, has some control of earth, and has obtained his sword.

• BATTLE OF THE LABYRINTH • June 2-August 18, 2008 (age 11-12)

- Minos manipulates Nico as they travel together through the Underworld, encouraging him to seek vengeance for his sister’s death.

- Nico burns his Mythomagic cards.

- Nico wants to bring Bianca back from the dead, but needs the soul of someone who has cheated death. He’s already offered his own. Percy initially believes they are after him.

- His many attempts to summon Bianca fail.

- He goes to Geryon seeking information for the soul he needs, but instead Geryon captures him, intending to sell him into the Titan army. Though he doesn’t want him to, Percy saves him.

- Percy figures out that Bianca has been sending him Iris-messages, warning him about what Nico has been up to so he can protect her brother.

- Nico blames Percy for Bianca’s death, and is upset when he encourages Nico to summon her, and it is only then that she appears. She tells Nico that he is not angry Percy, but with her, because she was the one who abandoned him. She pleads with him to let go of his anger and forgive.

- His power is strong enough to draw the attention of Kronos.

- Nico is left behind at Geryon’s ranch, but Minos tricks him back into the Labyrinth to save Percy, where he is once again captured. He is brought to Daedalus’ lab – as Daedalus is the soul Minos truly wants, so that he can return from the dead. During the ensuing battle, Nico banishes Minos to the Underworld.

- When they find Pan, the god speaks to everyone personally – except Nico.

- During the Battle at CHB, Nico summons skeletons to defend the camp. The effort nearly kills him.

- Nico claims to understand that Bianca should stay where she is, and releases Daedalus’ soul. He also forgives Percy, who returns his Hades figurine.

- Feeling he can’t remain in the camp – there is no Hades cabin as Hades has no place in Olympus – he leaves again. He wants to find answers to the missing pieces in his past.

- August 18: On Percy’s birthday, he turns up at Percy’s apartment with a plan that might help them defeat Kronos.

• SWORD OF HADES • Mid-December, 2008

- Persephone abducts Percy, Thalia, and Nico and tasks them with finding the spy who stole Hades’ new sword.

- The spy, Ethan, raises the Titan Iapetus, whom Percy flings into the Lethe, causing him to lose his memory.

-Percy convinces Iapetus that his name is Bob.

- (Bob later works as a janitor for Hades, and Nico visits him often.)

- The sword is recovered. Percy and Thalia return to the surface, but Nico remains in the Underworld.

• THE LAST OLYMPIAN • August 11-September 1, 2009 (age 12-13)

- In the lead-up to the Battle of Manhattan, Nico’s plan is to have Percy bathe in the Styx to gain invincibility.

- Nico has learned how to shadow travel. (His first time, he passed out for a week.)

- In his desperation to learn about his mother, he made a deal with Hades. He agrees to bring Percy to Hades, but makes Hades promise not to harm Percy. But Hades tricks him, and has Percy locked away – unharmed – instead.

- During the exchange, Hades points out that Bianca would have done a better job, calls Nico honest but dense, and seems disappointed in Nico’s…everything.

- Nico breaks Percy out of prison, and they follow through with their plan. Percy gains the Curse of Achilles and defeats Hades’ army.

- Nico wishes to go with Percy back to the surface, but Percy tells him to remain behind in the Underworld. He is tasked with convincing Hades to fight in the upcoming war. (Nico is worried that Hades will hate him (even more), and believes that Percy is leaving him behind because he no longer trusts him.)

- Nico attempts to summon his mother, but Bianca stops him. He is given a vision of the day she was killed by Zeus, and how it led to Hades cursing the Oracle of Delphi.

- Nico uses this knowledge to confront Hades and try and convince him to fight with the Olympians in the war. He argues that Kronos won’t stop at Olympus – he’ll come for the Underworld next. Hades, though, feels no obligation to the family that has shunned him, or the brother that killed Maria. During the argument, Hades lights a fire in his hand, and Nico dares him to strike him (It’s “just what the other gods would expect”). Hades hurls the fire at a tree next to Nico instead.

- August 18: Battle of Manhattan: Nico arrives to the battle, followed by Hades and the armies of Erebus.

- Kronos is defeated, and the Second Titan War ends.

- Hades’ curse on the Oracle is broken as his children are permitted a cabin at the camp. Rachel Dare becomes the new Oracle. Nico summons a team of skeletons to help build his cabin.

• Up to THE LOST HERO • September – December, 2009

- After a couple of weeks, Nico begins to feel unwelcome in the camp once more and leaves.

- Hades gives Nico a French zombie chauffeur, Jules-Albert, because he vaguely understands that parents drive their kids around.

- Hades shows Nico Camp Jupiter – the Roman demigod camp, and tells him that it is important to make connections there. Nico becomes Ambassador of Pluto and keeps both camps secret from each other.

- Thanatos (God of Death) is captured, allowing for the dead to return. Nico takes the opportunity to go to the Underworld to try and find Bianca, only to find she’s been reborn.

- Instead, he finds another sister – Hazel. Believing she deserves a second chance, he brings her to Camp Jupiter, as she is a child of Hades’ Roman aspect, Pluto.

- Percy goes missing. Nico moves between both camps and assists in the search.

• THE SON OF NEPTUNE • June 19-25, 2010 (age 13-14)

- Percy turns up in Camp Jupiter without his memories, but Nico pretends not to know him. He tells Hazel that he can’t interfere. Percy needs to find his own way.

- Nico tells Percy about Gaea’s waking – how the Titan’s defeat in the previous war has caused her to stir, and giants are being reborn.

- Percy, Hazel, and Frank (Hazel’s boyfriend) are tasked with finding and freeing Thanatos. Nico is afraid that Thanatos will reclaim Hazel’s soul once he is freed, and she will not return.

- Before she leaves on her quest, Nico tells Hazel that he is going to track the escaping ghosts and find the Doors and Death.

- (Nico enters Tartarus. Unlike other demigods, he can see through the Mist and see Tartarus for what it truly is.

- He encounters Akhlys, the protogenoi of misery and poison, but she deems him too perfect and too miserable to torture him further.

- He is quickly overwhelmed by Gaea’s forces and taken captive.)

- Gaea tells Hazel that Nico has been captured. When she asks Thanatos if Nico is alive, he tells her the answer is in Rome.

- Percy tells Hazel they will find Nico – though he is angry at Nico for lying to him when they met at CJ.

• MARK OF ATHENA • June 25-July 1, 2010

- Nemesis tells Hazel that Nico only has six more days before he dies.

- Nico is held captive by the twin giants Otis and Ephialtes, to be used as bait to lure the Seven into a trap. He is confined in an airtight jar. To stay alive, he puts himself in a “death trance” by eating pomegranate seeds from Persephone’s garden, so that he does not consume oxygen.

- (The Seven argue over whether or not it’s a good idea to save Nico. Jason and Leo in particular are worried that he can’t be trusted.)

- Annabeth sees Nico as “too moody. There was a darkness in him that made her uneasy.”

- July 1: Nico is rescued by the Seven after eight days in the jar. He is extremely weak and malnourished. He tells them about the Doors of Death, and how they must be sealed from both sides – Tartarus and the mortal side in the House of Hades. Having survived Tartarus – and only because Gaea wanted him for bait - he believes this is impossible.

- The crew goes to retrieve Annabeth and the Athena Parthenos – the key to forging peace between CHB and CJ.

- Before Percy and Annabeth fall into Tartarus, Percy makes Nico promise to bring the others to the Doors.

• THE HOUSE OF HADES • July 3-18, 2010

- The crew heads of to Epirus to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death on the Argo II.

- In Venice, Nico reveals that he can still speak Italian. He knows that Hades had met his mother here, and that he and Bianca were born here, but he doesn’t really remember Italy.

- He goes with Frank and Hazel to the Black House to return Triptolemus’ almanac and gain information about the House of Hades. Frank is nervous about being alone with Nico, and grateful when Hazel offers to go with them. “He had a hard time imagining Nico di Angelo acting out of love for anybody, except maybe Hazel.”

- Nico keeps to himself and stays up on the mast where he can be alone. He refuses to use Percy’s cabin.

- (In Tartarus – Bob the Titan helps Percy and Annabeth, because Nico had told him Percy was a friend.)

- In Croatia, Nico goes with Jason to Diocletian’s Palace to retrieve the scepter. (Jason doesn’t want to go alone with Nico, but Nico rejects Piper’s offer to go with them.)

- There, they encounter Cupid, who forces Nico to confess that he has romantic feelings for Percy – something he feels a great deal of shame and self-hatred over. Jason offers his support, but Nico closes himself off.

- Having been witness to Nico’s memories and feelings, Jason makes an effort to be his friend and starts defending him when others talk poorly about him or make jokes.

- In the palace of the Lord of the South Wind, Jason tries again to gain Nico’s trust, but it only angers Nico. Nico claims that he will never be accepted anywhere. He says he will keep his promise to deliver the crew to Epirus, and close the Doors and Death, and then he plans to leave forever.

- In Epirus, they enter the House of Hades. The first task is to drink from a chalice of poison. Nico offers it to Jason first, questioning whether he truly does trust him. Jason drinks without hesitation.

- July 18 - Percy and Annabeth escape Tartarus.

- Nico volunteers to shadow travel the Athena Parthenos, Reyna, and Coach Hedge to Camp Half-Blood, despite previous claims he could barely transport just himself.

- Percy tries to thank Nico, but is brushed off.

• THE BLOOD OF OLYMPUS • July 20-August 3, 2010

- Using his powers to transport himself, Reyna, Hedge, and the Athena Parthenos, takes a toll on Nico. Reyna lends him her strength, but in return can feel his pain.

- Hades meets him in Evora, Portugal, who warns him that Orion is hunting them. He also fears Nico will not survive his quest, and offers to prepare a room for him in the Underworld. He expresses a desire to see Nico happy.

- Lycaon and his wolf pack attack at high noon – no shadows. Nico lures Lycaon close enough to stab him (Lycaon tears up both his arms in the process) and uses the werewolf’s shadow to escape just as Orion arrives.

- In Puerto Rico, Reyna tries to lift a sleeping Nico’s head, but her hand passes right through.

- The Hunters of Artemis take Reyna. Nico finds the note they left behind and throws a fit. He has held a grudge against them ever since Bianca joined their ranks and died in their service.

- In Buford, SC – Nico’s fading worsens. He begins to fear the dark, afraid that he will melt into it and not return.

- Bryce Lawrence confronts them and summons undead soldiers to arrest Reyna and kill Nico and Hedge. Enraged, Nico kills Bryce by turning him into a ghost and banishing him. (As with his confrontation with Cupid, his memories, emotions, and pain are shared with everyone around him.) He collapses and falls into a coma that lasts three days, and becomes so insubstantial, Reyna and Hedge are unable to move him from where he falls.

- Nico wakes to find Reyna and Hedge are still with him. He offers to take the Athena Parthenos the rest of the way tot CHB, though the effort would most definitely kill him. They refuse. Hedge has already found them help in the form of Pegasus.

- August 1: The trio arrives at CHB, where CJ has them under siege and preparing to attack under the leadership of Octavian. Nico breaks away from the others to sabotage the siege weapons.

- Nico finds Octavian’s tent, and contemplates assassinating him, but is stopped by Will & Friends. Will, sensing that Nico is not strong enough to use his powers, insists they all go in together and alter the trajectory of the siege weapons. This buys Reyna enough time to bring the Athena Parthenos the rest of the way into CHB, sealing peace between the Greeks and Romans.

- Gaea rises. Octavian thinks to bring himself glory by firing on Gaea, unaware that his robes are caught on the projectile. Nico notices, but does not prevent Octavian from following through with his plan and launching himself as a fiery ball into the goddess. As this explosion came on the heels of Leo’s attack on Gaea – also ending his life – Nico feels guilty, worried that his letting Octavian go led to Leo being killed.

- Nico is asked to give the fallen demigods their final rites. He decides to remain in CHB, which makes Jason happy. He also tells Percy that he used to have a crush on him, but that he’s over it. He agrees to spend at least three days recovering in the infirmary, at Will’s insistence.

• Up to and beyond THE HIDDEN ORACLE • January, 2011 (age 14-15)

- Nico and Will begin dating.

- Citing a “mood disorder”, in which Nico inadvertently summons skeletons when he has to eat alone, Nico is given permission to sit at the Apollo table.

- Nico is uncomfortable with PDA.

- Despite a whole lot of bickering, Nico and Will are rarely seen apart. Nico assists Will with his infirmary duties. When Nico passes out from shadow traveling, Will takes it stride, implying that fainting after using his powers is a regular occurrence.

- March: Nico feels Jason die.

• THE TOWER OF NERO • June, 2011

- Nico receives confirmation of Jason’s death. Will reveals that Nico reacted very badly – comparing it to when Bianca died. It acts as a trigger.

- Nico has PTSD. He gets flashbacks, waking dreams, and has been hearing a voice calling him back to Tartarus. (He believes the voice may be Bob the Titan.) Dionysus has taken over as a sort of therapist for Nico, helping him sort through what is real and what isn’t. Will has decided, if Nico must return to Tartarus, he will go also.

- Nico is far more open about his relationship status, proclaiming Will is his boyfriend, when before he was more reserved. And while not overly affectionate, he will hold hands with or lean on Will.

- Nico learns he is part of the newest prophecy. A relationship he’s been forging with “cave-runners” – troglodytes – is key to defeating Nero. (He sought them out because Hades has forbidden him from returning to Tartarus, and he believes they can circumvent his father’s domain and get him into Tartarus.) He has been learning their language and customs.

- Will carries snacks and a travel pillow with him for those times when Nico passes out.

- Nico has, at some point, learned to turn people into skeletons with a touch and can summon his sword "from thin air".

• Canon/Headcanon •

- Nico doesn't know how old he actually is, but has a vague idea.

- Dropped out of school in the 5th grade - when he was taken to CHB. Has never returned.

- Is very good at poker. Was banned from the Hermes cabin on poker nights because he was able to swindle the Stolls shortly after arriving to CHB.

- Does not like the Hunters of Artemis. Hates that Thalia continued to recruit more girls after Bianca, as if her death meanth nothing.

- Has PTSD.

- Does not eat much.

- Mostly speaks English, but knows Italian and Ancient Greek, has picked up some Latin from his time in New Rome, and has been learning to communicate with troglodytes.

- Claustrophobic, from his time spent in the jar. Cannot handle tight spaces or feeling as if he can't breathe.

- Does not like leaving people behind. Was the only one to speak to Hestia in years. Visited Bob regularly in the Underworld.

- Reacted very badly to Jason's death, on par with how he reacted to Bianca's death years prior. Jason was his first real friend.

- Does not regret killing Bryce or allowing Octavian to die. He was more worried how his friends would react to his killing/allowing the death to happen.

- Does not have reservations when killing foes.
